Developing Leaders and Improving Lives in the World's Developing Countries
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences hereby establishes the Office of International Programs (International Programs) in order to promote international learning and involvement of the College’s faculty and students.
International Programs will strengthen support for CALS faculty, students and staff engaged in international initiatives. These initiatives cover a wide range of efforts including scientific exchanges, overseas research, undergraduate and graduate education, professional development, technical assistance, advising, publications, and other outreach.
International Programs will provide programs and activities—some College-based and some with university-wide mandates—an administrative base (a platform) with strong support services in administration and communication. Initially operating on this platform will be the Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD), Bridging the Rift (BTR) at Cornell, International Integrated Pest Management (IIPM), the McKnight Foundation Collaborative Crops Research Program (CCRP), and the Strategic World Initiative for Technology Transfer (SWIFTT). In addition, International Programs will coordinate all academic and professional development programs, as well as the many international collaborative partnerships previously managed by the International Agriculture Program of CALS.
The programs of International Programs will be managed and administered by a Director who, at the option of the Dean of CALS, may also be designated as an Associate Dean.
The Director will be assisted in program implementation by a Senior Associate Director and an executive group to be comprised of the Directors of major units on the administrative platform and Directors of Administration and Communication for International Programs.
Program guidance will be provided by faculty designated as International Professors. Designation as an International Professor will be achieved through a 3-step process: (1) nomination by the Director of International Programs or a CALS Department Chair; (2) soliciting the advice of incumbent International Professors and the Director of International Programs; and (3) appointment by the Dean of CALS. Appointments will be for a finite period of time, usually 3-5 years, and will be renewable based on professional contributions (teaching, research, and extension) to International Programs. The indefinite (permanent) designation of International Professor will cease to exist.
Prior to the beginning of each fiscal year the Director will provide to the Dean a projection of revenue for the coming fiscal year and propose a budget based on his/her assessment of the needs and obligations of the program. Based on that projection, and resources available, the Dean will approve an annual budget.
This charter may be modified by the Dean of CALS in consultation with the Director of International Programs.
