Frosty Hill Fellowships

The Fellowship

Cornell University dedicates the "Frosty" Hill Agricultural Research Fellowship to the memory of Dr. Forrest F. Hill, cofounder of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), in honor of his significant contributions to the application of agricultural sciences in addressing critical world food problems. This fellowship supported CGIAR scientist to spend 6-12 months at Cornell.

Starting this year (2012), the dean (Kathryn Boor) has approved a new model for the Frosty Hill Fellowship. See below for details.

The new model will provide modest funding, up to $2,500 to support CALS faculty members who are interested in international research and scholarly exchange with the International Agricultural Research Centers of the CGIAR. For a list of Centers and their research programs please see http://www.cgiar.org/centers/index.html. We hope that this fellowship will continue to create many opportunities for scientists from the major international centers to work together with scientists from Cornell on significant agricultural problems of mutual priority and concern.

Letters of application should be submitted by March 31, 2012 to International Programs, 252 Emerson Hall -- marked Attn: James Haldeman. Electronic copies may be sent to Denise Percey at dmp3@cornell.edu. Jim will be coordinating the review process. Awards will be announced by April 30. Travel support allocations of up to $2,500 will be available to promote and extend the work of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences through scientific exchanges or research planning. All members of the CALS faculty are eligible to apply, but funds are limited and preference will be given to younger faculty members who have not previously received support for international travel. Travel support allocations will be awarded particularly for spending time at a CGIAR center that has special value for the applicant and for College programs.

Applications for travel support should be in the form of a letter, not over two pages in length, which provides information on the dates, nature and location of the proposed travel for study, and the value of such study and travel for the College as well as the applicant. The letter should include a statement about how your university responsibilities will be covered during your absence. Please include a budget reflecting the amount of support being requested and how the funds will be used. The International Programs office will assemble the list of applications for review and approval by the Executive Council of the College.

Applicants should send an informational copy of the letter to their department chair. An endorsement from the chair supporting the request, indicating how this travel will strengthen the department's program, is required. The number and amount of awards that can be made this year will depend on number of applications and amount of funding being requested. The intention of the College is to support as many of its faculty as possible, especially its younger faculty, to establish connections and acquaintances internationally.

IP/CALS can assist faculty in making contacts at the CG centers. "Frosty" Hill grants should contribute as much as possible to increasing the capacities of CALS faculty to incorporate international experience and knowledge into their teaching, research and outreach activities.
