Bt eggplant, which is featured in a chapter highlighting ways the bioengineered food crop has improved food security and farmer incomes in Bangladesh, has been an exemplar across key areas identified by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
After 15 years of testing and safety trials, the Philippines has become the second country to allow farmers to grow eggplant varieties genetically modified to resist the devastating insect known as the eggplant fruit and shoot borer.
The four Bt varieties yielded on average 19.6% more than non-Bt varieties and earned growers 21.7% higher revenue.
